Professional gamblers in the Old West, the really good ones, were called 'thoroughbred gamblers.' I'm listing several thoroughbreds and sources where you can get more information, as well as a few famous gamblers, not necessarily thoroughbreds, but definitely well-known. Three of the more famous women gamblers of this time were Calamity Jane, Poker Alice, and Madame Mustache. Before long, many of the Old West mining camps such as Deadwood, Leadville, and Tombstone became as well known for gunfights over card games than they did for their wealth of.

Sometimes I buy a book because of its striking dustcover and in this case its unusual story. The book itself is in near-fine condition with just a bit of foxing(light spotting) to the top edge. The fore-edge as well as the bottom edge are fine and clean. There is no foxing to the textblock and the book has some photographs included. There is very slight toning to the outside extremity of the ffep(First free endpaper). All corners are square and the book is a beautiful blue color that is unstained and unmarked. But it is the cool dustjacket that attracted me to this book. It is in Very Good+ condition and it is price-clipped at the bottom of the inside front flap. There is a tiny bit of shelf-wear to the extreme top of the spine and almost invisible miniscule wear to the outside corner extremities of the jacket. It's really hard to see. The back panel is slightly toned near the spine and there almost no soiling but for that. The book makes a great presentation and an unusual item. This is the story of the cool little man who came to be respected from Leadville to Laramie for dealing a square game and talking no nonsense. He fought along with the Earps and Doc Holliday at Dodge City and at the shootout in Tombstone. He had to fight his own war in Ft. Worth where he was acknowledged as the King of Gamblers. This is a vivid and dramatic story of a man whose life ended only when civilization had made gunplay and gambling to be seen as evil. A terrific book. We are Pleased to send pictures on request.
